"A RIDE ON THE TROJAN HORSE by Loretta Scott Miller, 1st Books Library (www.1stbooks.com), 1997, $4.95, electronic format.
There are two unusual aspects to this first detective novel. The first is that it has been published online. By using the address given above and paying $4.95, the prospective reader can download the novel in one of several different formats.
The second is a three-generation team of private investigators, Uncle Beau, TJ, and TJ's daughter Lisbee. TJ is followed, then shot, while returning from an evening with a girlfriend. He lands at a nearby B&B run by an attractive widow. While TJ is recovering at the B&B, Lisbee is hired by a local ecology research firm to investigate possible encroachments into their computer system. The two cases ultimately converge in a surprising but credible grand finale.
All three detectives are well drawn and engaging characters. The northern California atmosphere is effectively evoked. Both this unusual team of detectives and their setting promise practically endless possibilities for future plots. Altogether, a very readable first novel. Both it and its means of publication are worth exploring. - Mary A. Sarber"
